COMRADES AND READERS!

Comrade Arkadii is safely home from serving the Motherland and taking a much needed rest. I trust he will be back at STAVKA soon enough, working on the recruit pages, and putting those who need it, "into the ditch".

After being dormant for almost two years, we are back. We are switching our publication schedule to four times a year. This will give our regular contributors more time to work on in-depth articles. Once again, I encourage all of you to contribute an article, opinion piece, research or photographs. You really should submit something so the NKVD will leave you alone. We have also changed our look and format.  Let me know what you think.

We have a guest contributor this issue, Dr Kazimiera J. Cottam. She has written several books - Women in War and Resistance: Selected Biographies, Women in Air War: The Eastern Front of World War II, On the Road to Stalingrad: Memoirs of a Woman Machine Gunner, and Defending Leningrad: Women Behind Enemy Lines.  It is an honor to feature her article on the pilot Lidya (Lily) Vladimirovna Litvyak.

I would also like to thank the (in)famous Mattski, of ReproPaperwork fame, for providing us with our fancy new red star icons.
