Brookings register | Guild of the art museum “on the move”
BROOKINGS – The South Dakota Art Museum Guild will host its first program and reunion of the season on September 28, featuring Donna Merkt, recently appointed director of the South Dakota Art Museum. The title of his program is âOff and Running! “
Merkt believes that art and museums should connect diverse people, promote inclusiveness and enrich life. In June 2021, Merkt was appointed director of the South Dakota Art Museum. Previously at the Gaylord-Pickens Museum Oklahoma Hall of Fame, Merkt served as Director of Museum Experience (2019-2021), overseeing the education, exhibits and collections teams as they pivoted to deliver robust virtual content and programming during the pandemic. .
Prior to that, she was Curator of Education for the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art (2008-2019), where she exponentially increased the participation of K-12 students and spearheaded the introduction of Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) in Oklahoma. Merkt is a member of the first class of internationally certified VTS animators. She is also an individual member of the Board of Directors of the Mountain Plains Museums Association and is President of MPMA EdCom and Mountain Plains representative for AAM EdCom. Merkt received his BA in Fine Arts from Cameron University (Lawton, OK) and his MA in Art History from the University of Oklahoma.
