Half-shredded Banksy could fetch over $ 5 million at auction
A Banksy piece of art that sensationalally shredded itself right after being sold for $ 1.4 million is on sale again – at several times the previous price.
Sotheby’s auctioneer said on Friday that “Love is in the Bin” will be offered at an auction in London on October 14. The coin has a presale estimate of £ 4-6 million ($ 5.5-8.3 million).
It consists of a half-ragged canvas bearing a spray-painted image of a girl catching a red heart-shaped balloon.
Known then as ‘Girl With Balloon’, the work was sold at Sotheby’s in October 2018. Just as an anonymous European buyer made the winning bid, a hidden shredder integrated into the frame by Banksy came to life, leaving half of the canvas hanging from the frame in strips.
The buyer decided to proceed with the purchase – a decision that would be justified if the image met its estimated price.
Alex Branczik, President of Sotheby’s for Modern and Contemporary Art, described “Love is in the Trash” as “Banksy’s ultimate work and a true icon of recent art history“.
“Love is in the Trash was born from the most spectacular artistic event of the 21st century,” he said. “When ‘Girl With Balloon’ ‘self-destructed’ in our auction house, Banksy sparked a worldwide sensation that has since grown into a cultural phenomenon. “
The artwork will travel and be on display to the public in London, Hong Kong, Taipei and New York City ahead of its sale next month.
Bansky, who has never confirmed his full identity, began his career spray painting buildings in Bristol, England, and went on to become one of the world’s best-known artists. His playful and often satirical images include two policemen kissing, armed riot cops with yellow smiley faces, and a chimpanzee with a sign that reads “Laugh now, but someday I’ll be in charge.”
“Girl With Balloon” was originally stenciled on a wall in east London and has been reproduced endlessly, becoming one of Banksy’s best-known images.
